Visit Doncaster has unveiled its impressive line-up of fun-packed events for Doncaster’s town centre in 2019.
The council’s tourism arm will stage some trusty old favourites and a whole load of new events to offer something for everyone this year.
The official opening of the refurbished Wool Market will kick things off with two great events over the weekend of Saturday, 30 and Sunday, 31 March.
Saturday will see a wide variety of entertainers perform in the new look space, while on Sunday the square will be transformed into a wonderful Mother’s Day Garden. This will encourage visitors to bring their mum to experience the new look Wool Market which will open during the day and into the evening, six days a week, and offer an exceptional choice of food and drink.
Cllr Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Economic Development, said:
“The refurbished Wool Market and Market Square will be the venue for many of this year’s events. They promise to bring locals and visitors flocking into the town centre to enjoy a fabulous array of food, music, entertainment and culture.”
Every Friday from April to September will see a brand new opener to the weekend. The ‘Friday Night Live at the Wool Market’ will promote the thriving live music and entertainment scene in the town centre. Friday Night Live will be a late afternoon, early evening event that lifts the curtain to the venue-based entertainment packed across the town on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
May is a huge month for big events.
First up on Thursday, 2 May is the start of the Tour de Yorkshire from the Market Square which will be buzzing with excitement. The route involves a full tour of the town centre streets before heading over St George’s Bridge and weaving its way out of the borough. Friday to Monday following the tour will be an opportunity for visitors to see the other three stages of this world-class cycle race on a large screen in the Market. At night it will transform into a free open-air cinema to create a magical bank holiday weekend of fun.
May also sees the hugely popular Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival return. This year, leading celebrity chef and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Simon Rimmer and Great British Bake Off Winner Candice Brown will showcase their culinary skills. The event also includes a whole host of local chefs and foodies, town centre trails and a huge number of quality food and drink stalls. It’s one everyone must attend so get Friday, 17 to Sunday, 19 May in the diary.
Steampunk is back at the end of May and as we move into the summer months the Armed Forces Day celebrations take place in the town centre on Saturday, 29 June.
July is Culture month with a range of cultural events lined up and the ever-popular Dragon Boat Racing makes a big splash at Lakeside on Saturday, 13 July.
The 13th Doncaster Pride event is on Saturday, 17 August. It’s one of the biggest and certainly most colourful events in the diary. The following day on Sunday, 18 August we stage the Square Roots Music Festival bringing country, folk and roots music to the heart of the town.
September looks busy as always. It’s the finale of the Friday Night Live season which will see Market Square transformed into the very first ‘DN1 Live’ music event on Saturday, 7 and Sunday, 8 September. This festival of music will be partly outdoors and promote venue-based entertainment over an epic weekend of live musical entertainment. The iconic St Leger Festival takes place from Wednesday, 11 to Saturday, 14 September and we round off the month with more top notch cycling as we host the start of races for the 2019 UCI Road World Championships on Friday, 27 September.
Cllr Mordue, continued:
“Our events plan for 2019 is wide and varied providing something for all ages and tastes. We are set to stage some fantastic events and with a range of other exciting activities lined up and some great attractions there is always something for residents and visitors to do and enjoy in Doncaster. We look forward to welcoming visitors to our events and showcasing why Doncaster is such a great place. It’s going to be an exceptional year.”
