Waste Strategy

Doncaster's Waste Strategy (DWS) shows how Doncaster Council will manage waste and resources in the future - waste from households, council activities and some local businesses.

The Strategy sets out what we want to achieve and the types of services and technologies we will need to use to reach our goals.

We need to manage waste and resources in a way that does not compromise the potential for future generations to meet their own needs, the Strategy takes a long term view to 2025 and beyond. In conjunction with the Strategy an Action Plan has been produced to ensure goals are achieved.

Between them, the Strategy and the associated Action Plan seek to answer three fundamental questions:

  • where are we now?
  • where do we want to get to?
  • how are we going to get there?

Strategy and Action Plan

The structure of Doncaster's Waste Strategy (DWS) follows guidance from Defra on the production of such strategies. The Strategy itself comprises:

  • a Strategy document - which sets the long-term direction and policies for the borough - the intention is that this will need only occasional revision
  • an Action Plan - which sets a detailed plan of action for achieving the Strategy’s objectives. It is anticipated that this will be updated annually and form the basis for an annual waste work plan for the council

The councils of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham are working together to develop a Joint Strategic Waste Development Plan Document that will include proposals and policies to guide where new facilities will be built.

The latest consultation document for this plan is available on the joint waste plan page
