Bedbugs
Bedbugs are small insects that are active at night, bites are typically on the neck and shoulders, but can occur anywhere on the body. It is hard to identify bedbug bites from other insect bites.
Bedbugs are usually found in and around mattresses and bed frames, however they can also be found in wardrobes, drawers, under skirting boards and around door frames. They are easily transported on second hand furniture, luggage and in clothing and once in a property easily spread from room to room. Bedbug’s droppings can be easily spotted as they are small black spots on your mattress and bedframe.
People react differently to bites so there is no way we can tell what bit you just by looking at a bite.

What will happen?
- Before treatment can be provided a pest control operative will visit you to assess whether the insects are bedbugs and tell you how to prepare the property for treatment.
- If they confirm that they are bedbugs you will be asked to pay a treatment fee in cash to administer the treatment which will be arranged for a later date.
- We advise that all cases of bedbugs have two treatments due to the life cycle of the insect; each treatment is chargeable and is not covered by the guarantee period.
- It is not uncommon the see bedbugs for several days after the first treatment, this is due to eggs hatching and the inaccessible places bedbugs hide, this is why two treatments are advised.
- If the pest control operative finds that the infestation is not bedbugs they will discuss other treatment options with you. These may require payment.

Bees
Bees are the main pollinators of many of our wildflowers, crops and vegetables. Many plants would struggle to reproduce if it were not for the bees. Bees are on the decline, since the 1950s many have had their populations halved.
There are different types of bees with different characteristics.
- Masonry and Mining bees – non aggressive bees. They have hairy bodies that appear brown and orange. They are active and breed between March and June and die off once they have laid their eggs. Masonry bees lay their eggs in passages they make in soft mortar and mining bees lay theirs in soil.
- Bumble bees – non aggressive, social bees that will only sting if threatened. They have large black and yellow hairy bodies. They never swarm or attack. They create nests covered in moss and usually located on the ground or under wood piles/sheds. We recommend that nests are left alone as they are unlikely to cause you a problem.
- Honey bees – have dark brown and black stripes. Honey bees are the only type of bees that swarm. They are usually non aggressive when swarming and will only react if they feel they are under threat. Swarms occur due to population increases when a group of worker bees leave to form a new colony with a queen. If you find a swarm of bees gathered on a surface like a branch or fence, clinging to each other and they remain there for over a week they are unlikely to move on. Bee keepers can re-home the swarm if accessible or give you advice.
How do I request a treatment?
- Doncaster Council do not treat bees. This is due to the declining numbers and pesticide restrictions.
- For further information and guidance and details of local beekeepers please visit The British Bee Keepers Association (BBKA) website.
- Read the Bumblebee Conservation Trust's information on bees.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are large robust insects with whip-like antennae and two pairs of wings. The most common species found in the UK are the Oriental and German cockroach. They prefer warm moist conditions of 20-33 degrees. As they are nocturnal, they spend the daytime hiding in cracks and crevices in areas such as sinks, drains, cookers, backs of cupboards, and around fridge motors. Oriental cockroaches can also be found in cooler and less humid conditions such as drains and basements.

- A high standard of hygiene is extremely important as this will deny the insect food. To reduce the risk of harbouring cockroaches, all cracks and crevices should be sealed, particularly in food preparation areas.

Earwigs
The Common earwig is nocturnal, scavenging on dead plant and animal matter at night and retreating to hide under stones or in rotten logs during the daytime. Female Common earwigs are excellent mothers: laying their eggs in damp crevices, they guard the nest and gently clean the eggs until the young hatch. They will then guard the young until they are ready to fend for themselves. The pincers of the Common Earwig can give a human a small nip, but they are generally used to scare off predators.
All Treatments are done inside a Domestic Properties we do not treat Gardens.

Fleas are small insects that range from 1mm-8mm in length. They are commonly found in houses with cats or dogs but may also be present in houses that have been empty for a period of time due to different life stages lying dormant. Adult fleas feed on blood, their bites can be irritating and painful, and although they do not live on people they can still bite especially if the cat/dog has recently moved out.

Wasps
There are several different species of wasps in the UK. The most common being the German wasp and the Common wasp. Their nests are sometimes built underground, in cavities, sheds, outbuildings and in trees; they’re made out of a paper pulp and are strong enough to survive strong winds and torrential rain. Wasps are widely feared due to their ability to sting which can be very painful. Wasps do not die after stinging and they can sting you more than once.
You are unlikely to see large numbers of wasps before the end of May.
All treatments for wasps are carried out from the outside exit point, the operative is unable to enter loft spaces and other confined areas.
