UCI 2019 - Doncaster Dome Start
On Friday 27th September, the Womens Junior and Mens Under 23 Road Races for the UCI Road World Championships started at Doncaster Dome.
Both the Womens Junior and Mens Under 23 Road Race athletes were greeted by 1000x schoolchildren cheering them on as they took part in the sign on process in the Domes Main Hall.
Many of the athletes who experienced this spectacle gave feedback after their race saying they were blown away by the atmosphere they walked in to when entering the hall. UCI were so impressed by this original approach to the sign on process, they will be promoting it as good practice for future UCI related events across the globe.
The athletes then lined up along the newly created Cycle Circuit, where they set off and did two laps before leaving the venue to continue on throughout Doncaster.
They were cheered on by thousands of local and international cycling fans who had come to the Dome to see the teams prepare in the Team Car Park, see the start of the races and the launch of the Cycle Circuit.
Once the races had left the Dome, the School children were invited to participate in free swimming or skate sessions in the venue.
The feedback from the children was overhelming. They had been made VIPs for the day and many advised it had been the best day of their lives.
