Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) Consultation - Summer 2024

Every local authority that has an active Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) is required under Part IV of the Environment Act to provide an Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) as a means to address the areas of poor air quality that have been identified within the AQMA. The emphasis within AQAPs should be two-fold:

  • To develop measures that will provide the necessary emissions reductions to achieve the air quality objectives within specified timescales and to set out how the local authority will exercise its functions in order to secure achievements of air quality objectives; and
  • Act as a live document which is continually reviewed and developed, to ensure current measures are progressing and new measures are brought forward. From April 2023, it will be recommended, where possible, that local authorities in England maintain an up-to-date online version of their AQAP as a resource both for the public and for other local authorities. Local Authorities should still, as a minimum, revise their AQAP every 5 years.

City of Doncaster Council currently has eight declared AQMAs and as such have developed an AQAP to bring forward appropriate measures to reduce concentrations and achieve compliance with the Air Quality Standards.

Part IV of the Environment Act 1995 requires that local authorities undertake a review and assessment of the air quality within their area and, where necessary to meet the Air Quality Objectives, declare Air Quality Management Areas and produce Action Plans detailing the measures required to be taken in order to meet the Air Quality Objectives.

Phase 1 of this process was completed in December 2003 and Doncaster has currently completed the latest phase of reporting. The latest report can be found in PDF format on this page.
