Extra care housing schemes
Extra care housing provides 24-hour support for older people who want to remain independent or can no longer live in their own homes.
What is Extra care housing?
Extra care housing is purpose built accessible housing that allows people over 55 to stay independent and look after themselves for longer, in their own self-contained home. They offer different levels of care and housing support for people who need support to live independently and is a positive alternative to residential care.

Extra care housing offer a range of community facilities. For example:
- hairdressers
- restaurant
- communal lounge
They are normally located near to local amenities including:
- shops
- bus routes
- doctor's surgery
Please note that the facilities offered may differ in each scheme.
Extra care housing in Doncaster
There are four Extra care housing schemes:
- Swallowdale, Edlington
There are 52 two bedroom apartments for rent, 10 two bedroom apartments and 2 two bedroom bungalows available on a shared ownership basis. The facilities include a communal lounge, restaurant, hair and beauty salon, well-equipped laundry room, assisted bathing suite, assisted buggy storage area, car parking and a guest suite. The landscaped gardens have seating areas for residents to use.
- Rokeby Gardens, Kirk Sandall
Rokeby Gardens benefits from 52 two bedroom apartments which are either for rent or shared ownership. There are extensive facilities including residents' lounges, restaurant, hair salon, guest suite, activity room and communal landscaped gardens.
- Charles Court, Armthorpe
Charles Court has 40 apartments: 36 one bedroom apartments and 4 two bedroom apartments. All apartments are for rent. There is a communal lounge, laundry room and guest room. There is also a 24 hour emergency call system and door entry system for your safety.
- Casson Court, Thorne
Casson Court has 72 apartments in total: 37 two bed apartments for shared ownership, and 35 apartments for rent (four one bed apartments and 31 two bed apartments). There are extensive facilities including residents lounge, restaurant, hair and beauty salon, well-equipped laundry room, assisted bathing suite, assisted buggy storage area, car parking and a guest suite. The extensive landscaped gardens have seating areas for residents to use.

If you are over 55, would like to live in extra care and have care support needs, contact Doncaster Adult Social Services and Wellbeing Team for more information.
Please note: You must have care support needs and will need a care support assessment to be completed by the Integrated Support and Assessment Team before you will be considered for a property in Extra Care housing.
