Active Travel Consultation: Highfields to Jossey Lane

City of Doncaster Council has been successful in securing funding from national government (Active Travel Fund 3) for improvements to walking and cycling facilities along a section of Great North Road / York Road between Broad Highway Roundabout and Jossey Lane. These improvements are part of a wider plan to create a network of good quality walking and cycling facilities across Doncaster.

Walking and cycling are not only beneficial for physical and mental health, helping people to keep fit and active, they also support the environment by reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.

The public consultation on the scheme is open until Thursday 31 October 2024. There are several ways you can provide feedback, these are detailed below, along with contact details for the Council’s Strategic Transportation Team should you have any questions.

What are we doing?

The proposed scheme makes a series of improvements to walking and cycling facilities between Broad Highway Roundabout and Jossey Lane, near to Don Valley Academy. It includes a section of new footway and cycleway, upgraded crossings and existing walking and cycling facilities upgraded to the current standards.

The scheme will improve walking and cycling journeys to school for students of Don Valley Academy living in Highfields. The scheme also provides an improved connection to walking and cycling facilities from Adwick train station along Doncaster Lane, to Highfields Country Park and into the city centre along York Road. Scheme plans will be on display at the Active Travel Hub, at in person drop-in sessions as well as on the City of Doncaster Council website: https://www.doncaster.gov.uk/services/get-involved/consultations

The scheme is described further below:

  • Creation of a section of new footway and offroad, segregated cycleway between Coppice Way and Green Lane adjacent to the northbound carriageway. The existing road space will not be altered to accommodate this facility.
  • Walking and cycling facilities resurfaced and improved to current standards for active travel (LTN 1/20) throughout the remainder of the scheme up to the junction withJossey Lane and
  • Don Valley Academy, including bus shelters changed to a cantilever type and shrubs and bushes trimmed back to create more available space.
  • Tactile paving installed at appropriate points throughout the scheme to aid visually impaired pedestrians.
  • Priority pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities including central islands installed at two junctions: with Green Lane and the Sycamores. This will enable these roads to be crossed in two stages, and help to reduce the speeds of vehicles turning at these junctions.
  • Secure cycle parking facilities installed.

How will this benefit local residents and businesses in the area?

Improvements made to Doncaster’s walking and cycling network provide people with more choice when it comes to choosing their mode of travel for short journeys. This includes accessing education and employment opportunities, green spaces, shops, businesses and other services, as well as public transport connections for longer journeys.
