Leger Way Active Travel Consultation
City of Doncaster Council is seeking comments from residents and businesses on a proposed scheme to improve facilities for walking, wheeling and cycling that make it safer, easier and more enjoyable to walk children to school, cycle to work, walk to the bus stop or to shops and other amenities.
These improvements connect to recently improved routes, including along Bennethorpe and Leger Way and include:
- Creation of a new section of segregated footway and two-way cycleway on an area of land behind Doncaster racecourse car park and the Hospital Park and Ride.
- Street lighting installed along the new section of footway / cycleway.
- Resurfacing existing footway throughout the scheme.
- Slight widening of a section of footway on Shaftesbury Avenue at its junction with Leicester Avenue (carriageway lane widths will not be impacted).
- Installation of fencing running alongside the new cycleway (consistent with the existing style low fencing running along the perimeter of the racecourse carpark).
- Tactile paving installed at appropriate points throughout the scheme to aid navigation for visually impaired users.
The technical drawing for the scheme is available to download at the bottom of this page and also to view at the Active Travel Hub at Doncaster train station.
How will this benefit local residents and businesses in the area?
These improvements will make it easier and safer for people to walk and wheel more around the local area bringing benefits to people’s health and wellbeing as well as improving access to education, employment and green spaces.
How long will it take to construct?
After the public consultation has concluded, there is an approval and assurance process which needs to be followed. If the scheme is approved to go ahead, work is expected to be able to begin around March and be completed within approximately two months. The scheme will be constructed in phases to minimise disruption as much as possible and maintain access to businesses, homes and services. Instances of adverse weather may cause delays to the construction timeline.
