Old Edlington conservation area
Old Edlington was designated a conservation area on 19 November 1990. A full appraisal of the conservation area has not yet been carried out.
To view the location of the conservation area go to the Heritage Map.
The conservation area of Old Edlington on the magnesium limestone ridge is centred around the Norman Church of St Peter (Grade I Listed) which stands at a crossroads. The conservation area extends west to include Edlington Plantation due to its landscape value as a backcloth to the village when approached along the B6376 from the north.
The presence of an early medieval church, a probable 'manor farm', a characteristic 'back lane', and references to Edlington in the Domesday Book suggest a substantial early medieval settlement possibly grouped around a triangular village green which was then reduced to a core of agricultural buildings around the church. As a likely 'shrunken medieval village', archaeological potential is high in some areas possibly east of the main road and south of Back Lane.
The village is an agricultural settlement based on farms and associated structures notably the grade II listed 17th Century dovecote. These traditional buildings are constructed in random coursed rubble limestone with clay pantile roofs. Modern forms and materials of late 20th Century infill development now compete with this leaving the character of the conservation area delicately balanced.
The character of the conservation area is also affected by the busy and fast moving traffic on the wide B6376 road which divides it in two.
Within the conservation area there are three listed structures. These can be viewed on the Heritage Map which gives the address, grade and reference number of the listed building. The reference number can be used to find the listing description for any individual listed building using the Historic England database.
The above description of the conservation area is only a brief overview subject to a full appraisal that will consider in more depth the features that make up the significance of the area.
OldEdlington Conservation Area lies within the area covered by theEdlington Neighbourhood Plan which was adopted 19 July 2018. Full details of the plan and its policies which apply to the conservation area can be found at Edlington Neighbourhood Development Plan.
