Quality Streets and Active Travel
Our funding bid to Sheffield City Region for our next Quality Streets project in the town centre has been successful. The funding will see exciting changes being made to St Sepulchre Gate, Duke Street, Cleveland Street and Wood Street.
What is Quality Streets and Active Travel?
A number of schemes have been delivered in Doncaster Town Centre under the Quality Streets branding. The aim is to continue the transformation in the town centre and funding for the next phase of the scheme has been secured.
Update - Phase one completed
Work on St Sepulchre Gate and Duke Street is now complete. We are extremely grateful to local residents for their patience whilst construction work took place.
Improvements to the area to-date now include:
- Duke Street and St Sepulchre Gate carriageway completely resurfaced with new road markings
- New paving on all footways
- New planting / landscape areas
Phase two now underway
Work has now begun on Cleveland Street and Wood Street as part of Phase two of the Quality Streets Active Travel project. Phase two is expected to be completed by Winter 2023.
Improvement work will include:
- A bi-directional cycle lane connecting Doncaster Train Station with the Civic and Cultural Quarter.
- Improvements for pedestrians including wider pavements and better paving.
- Improved bus stops and real time information points.
- The introduction of one-way elements on parts of both streets.
- Improvements to the highway
- Improved green spaces with new trees and planting.
As part of the work, it is expected that Cleveland Street will need to be closed for a period of approximately seven months. Further communications have been sent to residents in the area.
A number of schemes have already been delivered in Doncaster Town Centre and Eurovia Contracting are continuing with this transformation by improving the streets and making the town centre a vibrant, desirable visitor destination on behalf of Doncaster Council.
Traffic Management will be advertised in advance and diversion routes will be in operation during any road closures.
Project Timescales
The construction works for phase two commenced September 2022 and are anticipated to take around 13-months with an expected scheme completion by Winter 2023. Hours of work will be from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, depending on daylight hours, with some weekend work scheduled as and when needed.
