The William Appleby Memorial Trust Awards Evening

Information about The William Appleby Memorial Trust Awards Evening and it's work with Doncaster Music Service.

The Awards Evening

The William Appleby Trust Committee recognises and encourages the contributions made by many of our young people to the musical activities of the area by hosting an annual award evening. This is for pupils who show evidence of a high level of attainment, such as marked success at a high grade of one of the recognised music examination boards, it also celebrates the commitment pupils have shown towards their music, recognises pupils who have continued to study and be involved in music despite personal challenges as well as a variety of other achievements.

The Awards Evening is held for those pupils reaching the conclusion of their DMS journey, which is usually at the end of their secondary education. Each pupil nominated receives a Certificate and a Gift Card in recognition of their commitment, achievement and dedication to DMS throughout their school life.

Usually, this event has been accompanied by a musical performance featuring one of the DMS Ensembles, such as: Doncaster Schools Vermuyden Concert Band, Beechfield Youth Orchestra, Senior Brass Group, Pedwar and Recorder Ensemble as well as invited school Ukulele groups. The ceremony also enjoys performances from awardees, and sometimes includes a speech from an invited Guest Speaker, such as Doncaster’s very own Dennis Rollins MBE and Freeman of The Town, in January 2019.

About the Awards

Originally, The Trust only had two awards. But, over the years, it has been extremely happy and honoured to include other musical awards as well... these awards are as follows:

The William Appleby Trust Award

This award celebrates the commitment pupils have shown towards their music, celebrating the achievement and dedication shown by pupils, who have continued their music studies throughout their school lives, made progress on their chosen instruments, and contributed towards the musical life of their school and/or DMS Ensembles.

The William Appleby Music Award

The William Appleby Award acknowledges and celebrates an exceptionally high level of participation and leadership across a range of DMS, school and community ensembles.

The Louise Marsh Music Award

Louise (née Louise Guest) sadly passed away at the age of 32, leaving behind her husband and then 2 year old son. Louise was a keen musician, starting on the Euphonium and progressing to Eb Horn when she moved to Mexborough School. She was a dedicated and passionate member of the William Appleby Music Centre. To keep Louise’s memory alive, Ryan Case, a friend of Louise’s organised this award in her name. It was to be specifically awarded to a ‘Brass Player’, whom he felt met the following criteria: A brass player who consistently demonstrated an outstanding level of performance on their instrument, and has shown a dedicated commitment to musical activities in DMS Ensembles, The Jazz Centre, their School and their Community.

The John Remmington Music Award

This award was created to celebrate the life of a former pupil, who died under tragic circumstances, and is for pupils who have continued to study and be involved in music despite personal challenges.

The Moray Hughes Music Award

The Moray Hughes trophy was set up in memory of a much loved and respected member of the DMS staff, who was also an outstanding performer. It celebrates the hard work that goes into preparing for exam grades, as well as the success that comes as a result. Each year, this is awarded to the pupil who has gained the highest mark at Grade 8 having been both entered and tutored by a member of DMS staff.

The Arthur Alsop Music Award

The Arthur Alsop trophy is presented in memory of the man who (in 1932) began teaching after-school music instrument lessons in two Doncaster schools. These lessons formed the initial foundations of the music service we have today! It is presented to a pupil who has achieved a high mark (Distinction) for an Associate Trinity College Diploma.

The Doncaster Music Education Hub High Achievement Award

This award celebrates the extremely high levels of playing, inspirational and dedicated involvement achieved by pupils both at DMS and in School.

The Doncaster Ukulele Group Award

This award is presented to a school which has received First Access Whole Class ukulele lessons during the previous academic year and has also demonstrated commitment to the First Access programme including quality support. Furthermore, the school should show evidence of Musical progression routes for their pupils. The winning school is also awarded a monetary award of 10% discount of a First Access programme for the following year.
