This page contains information to help you get started if you are beginning to explore the move to an Electric Vehicle.

As we transition to a greener, cleaner future, we must embrace new technologies and ensure that they are available for residents to use. The Government’s zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate sets out the percentage of new zero emission cars and vans that manufacturers will be required to produce each year up to 2030. This means that 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain will now be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035. Doncaster Council is committed to ensuring that, as we move towards 2035 there is sufficient charging infrastructure to support the transition to Electric Vehicles, which is why we need to act now. This transition is crucial to reducing transport emissions, improving air quality, and delivering on a clean transport system.

There are many ways in which you can charge an Electric Vehicle such as using publicly available infrastructure or charging at home.

Public Charging Infrastructure in Doncaster

Doncaster is home to numerous EV charging points for the public to use, including charge points in council owned carparks. Read more here: Car Parking in Doncaster

Aside from council owned chargers, there are many private chargers on offer in Doncaster. The best place to learn more is on the ZAPMAP website Map of electric charging points for electric cars UK: Zapmap (zap-map.com)

Charging at Home

Installing a Charger on your Driveway

If you have access to off-street parking, such as a driveway or garage, you may be able to install a home electric vehicle charge point on your property. You can find installers approved by the Office for Zero Emissions Vehicles (OZEV) here: Find an electric vehicle (EV) chargepoint installer - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Planning permission is generally not required as long as the area is lawfully used for off-street parking.

Guidance on planning requirements can be found on the Planning Portal here: Electric vehicle chargers - Electric vehicle charging - Planning Portal

Please note that we are unable to provide advice on specific installers or planning requirements. If you are unsure about planning permission please check online here Check if you need planning permission?

Charging Solutions not Permitted

Trailing Cables

Charging your vehicle by trailing a cable across the pavement or hanging it overhead is considered a hazard and is not permitted, even with the use of cable protectors or ramps.

Any legal liability arising from the placement of a cable or protector, such as injury to a member of the public or damage to public highways, is your responsibility. This doesn’t just include trip hazards but can also relate to electrical hazards posed by introducing a private electrical supply into the highway.

Innovative Solutions

Innovative solutions include but are not limited to:

  • Charge Gullies
  • Charge Arms
  • Trojan Chargers
  • Wireless Charging

City of Doncaster Council will periodically review innovative solutions however at this time we do not permit these solutions to be installed in the highway. If you would like to register your interest in using innovative solutions, please let us know here: Register your interest (EV Infrastructure)

We are aware of government grants which support cross pavement solutions, and we are continuously reviewing this solution.
