National Private Fostering Awareness Day: Your role in keeping children safe
Wednesday 6 November, is National Private Fostering Awareness Day.
What is private fostering?
It is when a child is looked after by someone who isn’t a close relative (not the child’s parent, step-parent, grandparent, or sibling) for more than 28 days or more. These arrangements, while sometimes informal, need to be reported to children’s services.
Why do children’s services need to know?
Children’s services have a responsibility to check the suitability of the arrangement, ensure the child’s safety, and offer support to the both the child and carer.
As an educational professional, you play a vital role to:
- Educate: Advise parents/ carers to report the private fostering arrangement
- Inform: Provide information about private fostering
- Report: If the parent or carer doesn’t report, you have a duty to do so.
You can find out more including how to get in touch with the private fostering team on the Doncaster Safeguarding Partnership Board website.
