In partnership with the National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi), this project aims to increase the profile of Supported Internships (SI’s), by working with education establishments and employers to create employment opportunities in Doncaster for those with SEND.

Find out more about Supported Internships on City of Doncaster's dedicated Pathways to Employment webpage.

How does the project work?

The project coordinates internal and external professionals to collaborate, share good practice, increase communication and develop a self-improving system by collecting data on current and predicted employer needs.

Launched in September 2022, the project is funded by the Department for Education and will double the current supported internship provision in England by 2025.

It is designed to support more young people with additional needs to have greater choice and control over their future, opening up opportunities that prepare them for adult life and independent living. Read more about the project and Supported Internships on the Gov.UK website.

Supported Internships are based primarily at an employer, usually last for one year and include extended work placements of at least six months.

Working in Partnership

It is a collaboration between the educational setting, employer and young person and is a process to layer and build on skills.

Doncaster along with other South Yorkshire local authorities are working on removing barriers to employment.

We work closely with the Rotherham Charity, Employment is for Everyone.  Four social enterprises - Speakup, DEXX, Artworks and EDLounge - came together to start the Employment is for Everyone social movement. Find out more on the Employment is for Everyone website

As part of this group, we have co-produced with experts by experience a ‘My Employment Plan.’ This plan is to help facilitate a conversation about reasonable adjustment.
