A public weighbridge is a weighbridge that is open for members of the public to use to weigh vehicles.

Operator's of public weighbridges are required to hold a certificate of competence issued by the Chief Inspector of Weights and Measures. This ensures that they can perform their duties competently. The certificate can be obtained after performing a test. No one can operate public weighing equipment unless they hold a certificate.

Public weighbridge operator's tests are conducted by virtue of the Weights and Measures Act 1985.

To book a test, the following information is required:

  • employer's name and contact number
  • address at which the test is to be taken
  • details of the equipment on which the test is to be taken, including the make and type of indication
