Keepmoat Stadium and Doncaster Rovers
The nearby Keepmoat Stadium holds just over 15,000 people. It is the home of Doncaster Rovers, Doncaster Belles Ladies, Doncaster Lakers Rugby League and Doncaster Athletics Club.
The first rugby game played there was on 27 December 2006, Doncaster Lakers lost 10-16 to Sheffield Eagles.
In the first football game Doncaster Rovers beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 on New Year’s Day 2007, with the first goal scored by Mark McCammon.
The stadium has also held England U19s fixtures, including England v Turkey in March 2007 and England v Iceland, October 2007.
Doncaster Rovers was formed in 1879. Albert Jenkins, a fitter at the Great Northern Railway works had organised a match for him and his friends against the Yorkshire Institute for the Deaf in the September. After the game the friends decided to form a team, becoming Doncaster Rovers.
Their first match was on the 3rd October 1879, away at Rawmarsh, which ended as a draw. The club was elected to the Football League in 1901.
Famous players for the club have included Brian Deane, striker (1985-88), Harry Gregg, goalkeeper (1952-58), Alick Jeffrey (1954-7, 1963-9) and Charlie Williams, centre half and famous comedian (1949-59).
Cormorants at Doncaster Lakeside
Cormorants (Phalacrocorax Carbo) are traditionally seen as coastal birds, but are now also commonly seen on inland lakes and rivers. They use Lakeside as a fishing ground, and seem to arrive more in winter.
They perch on the Lakeside buoys and at least six can often be seen. They fly around to scan for fish and bob about on the surface of the water, diving to swim underwater for quite a long time, emerging with fish in their beaks.
When returning to perch, they can be seen with wings outstretched, which is thought to assist wing drying.
